Managing Chores in Chore Boss

Chores in Chore Boss are organized hierarchically:

  • Areas (e.g., Kitchen, Bedroom, Pets) - represent rooms or categories in your home
  • Tasks - specific actions within an area (e.g., "Wash dishes" in Kitchen)
  • Chores - scheduled activities that combine an area with one or more tasks

Creating a Chore*

  1. Tap the + button on the home screen
  2. Select an Area - Choose from built-in areas or create a custom one
  3. Select Tasks - Pick one or more tasks for this chore (required)

  4. Assign Family Members (optional):

    • Anyone - Any assigned person can complete it
    • Everyone - Each person gets their own copy to complete separately
    • Rotating - Takes turns between assigned members

  5. Set Recurrence :

    • Once, As-Needed, Daily, Weekly, or Monthly
    • Configure specific days/intervals as needed

  6. Time Slots (optional) - Toggle "Repeats during the day" to schedule a chore at multiple times (e.g., 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM). Each slot gets its own completion tracking and reminder.

  7. Add Reward (optional):

    • Points or money, awarded per completion or weekly

  8. Set Reminder (optional) - Get notifications when due

  9. Photo Required (optional) - Require photo proof of completion

  10. Tap Save

* You can add up to 5 chores for a free account

Editing a Chore

  1. Tap on a chore from the home screen
  2. Tap the menu icon (three dots) in the top right
  3. Select Edit

  4. Modify any settings:

    • Change area, tasks, or assignments
    • Update recurrence schedule
    • Adjust rewards or reminders
    • Edit the chore name (displayed after creation)

  5. Tap Save

Deleting Chores

  1. Tap on a chore from the home screen
  2. Tap the menu icon (three dots) in the top right
  3. Select Delete
  4. Alternative you can tap Chores on the bottom menu
  5. Tap on the chore
  6. Tap the menu icon (three dots) in the top right
  7. Select Delete

Managing Areas

Built-in Areas

The app includes 25 preset areas:

Creating a Custom Area

  1. When creating/editing a chore, tap the Area dropdown
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap + Add New Area
  3. Enter the area name
  4. Select an emoji icon
  5. Tap Save

Custom areas appear alongside built-in areas when creating chores.

Switching Areas on a Chore

  1. Edit the chore
  2. Tap the current area field
  3. Select a different area from the dropdown
  4. The available tasks will update to match the new area
  5. Select new tasks for the chore
  6. Save

Managing Tasks

What Are Tasks?

Tasks are the specific actions that make up a chore. For example, a Kitchen chore might include:

  • Wash dishes
  • Wipe counters
  • Take out trash

Each area has its own set of preset tasks.

Adding Tasks to a Chore

  1. Create or edit a chore
  2. After selecting an area, the task picker appears
  3. Tap on tasks to add them (checkmark indicates selection)
  4. Multiple tasks can be selected for one chore

Removing Tasks from a Chore

  1. Edit the chore
  2. Tap on a selected task to deselect it
  3. At least one task must remain selected
  4. Save

Creating Custom Tasks

  1. When viewing the task list for an area, tap + Add New Task
  2. Enter the task name
  3. Tap Save

Custom tasks appear alongside preset tasks for that area.

Recurrence Options

Frequency Description
Once Due on a specific date only
As-Needed No fixed schedule; complete when needed
Daily Every X days (1 = every day, 2 = every other day, etc.)
Weekly Every X weeks on selected days
Monthly Every X months on specific dates or weekdays

Time Slots

For chores that need to happen multiple times per day (e.g., medication, pet feeding, walking the dog etc):

  1. Toggle "Repeats during the day" when creating/editing a chore
  2. Add time slots (e.g., 8:00 AM, 6:00 PM)
  3. Each slot appears as a separate entry on the home screen
  4. Each slot is completed independently
  5. Reminders are scheduled per slot

The chore detail screen shows a Daily Times section listing all configured slots.

Weekly Recurrence

  • Select which days of the week (Mon, Tue, Wed, etc.)
  • Set interval (every week, every 2 weeks, etc.)

Monthly Recurrence

Two modes:

  1. Day of Month - Select specific dates (1st, 15th, etc.)
  2. Week and Day - Select weeks (1st, 2nd, last) and days (Mon, Sat, etc.)

Assignment Types

Type Behavior
Anyone Any assigned person can complete the chore for everyone
Everyone Each assigned person must complete their own copy
Rotating Assigned members take turns based on your schedule

Rotating Chores

When using rotation:

  1. Assign 2+ family members
  2. Set rotation interval (every day/week/month)
  3. Optionally choose who starts the rotation
  4. The app automatically advances to the next person

Tips

  • Copy a Chore : Use the menu to duplicate an existing chore as a starting point
  • Delete a Chore : Available from the chore detail menu (admin/parent only)
  • Quick Tasks : Some screens allow creating chores from a single task tap
  • Chore Names : Auto-generated based on area and assignments; edit after creation if needed
